My ceramics
I started pottery in 2003 after being for many years a collector of
New Zealand ceramics. I had made one or two pieces before this time but
they were done as part of some craft-evenings with my partner and
friends. "Puff", my electric kiln arrived on 22 August 2003 and he was
funded from a bequest from my friend Des Ash. This signalled the start
of me taking pottery seriously.
I made the decision early to only hand-build, I was not interested in
throwing pots on a wheel. Over the whole of 2005 I had a "dry spell"
where I didn't make any pottery at all. Partly because I couldn't work
out what I wanted to build and partly because terracotta clay proved
difficult to build large pieces which , as it turned out, was what I
wanted to made.
Rick Rudd put me on to HGB clay in February 2006 and I have started
pottery again.
